The policy

We will get things wrong. When we do:

• We investigate within 24 hours of being told, whether the report comes from a company, a reader, or our own checks.
• We correct or retract within 48 hours.
• The correction runs at the top of the feed, in the same place the error ran, not in a footnote appended to the original.
• The correction stays up permanently, with the original error described plainly. We do not quietly edit a published figure and move on.
• The cause gets fixed. Every correction is traced back to the step that produced it, and the check that should have caught it is added. A correction that does not change anything upstream is an incomplete correction.

What counts as an error

A figure that does not match the disclosure we cited. A disclosure cited that does not say what we said it says. A company or person misidentified. A characterization of a pay design that the document does not support.

A number you disagree with is not by itself an error, and we will say so. If a company's own disclosure produces an uncomfortable figure, the disagreement is with the disclosure. We will publish the company's account of why alongside ours.

How to report one

Tell us what ran, what is wrong, and what the correct figure is. If you are the company, point us at the document. We would rather be corrected by the filer than by anyone else.

Why this page exists on day one

A corrections page published after the first mistake is a defense. A corrections page published before any mistake is a standard. We would rather be held to the second.
